The Twelve-Day on, Two-Day off Diet

This diet has had a few “incarnations” on the internet. I think it is public domain, because of the number of variations. I removed some of the “suspect” points about the diet, especially the points surrounding how much to expect to lose. That just isn’t true, nor safe.


1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. unsweetened grapefruit juice.
2 eggs, any style
2 slices of bacon


1/2 grapefruit or 8oz. unsweetened grapefruit juice
Salad with any dressing
Meat (including chicken) any style and any amount


1/2 grapefruit or 8oz. unsweetened grapefruit juice
Meat ( including chicken), any style and any amount, fish may be used, Vegetables: any green or red (cooked in butter or any seasoning, or salad as above)
Coffee or tea: One cup


8oz glass of tomato juice or skim milk


1. At any meal you may eat until you are full, until you can’t eat any more. You MUST eat the minimum at each meal.

2. Don’t eliminate anything from the diet, especially DON”T SKIP the bacon at breakfast or omit salads.

3. The grapefruit is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process. Don’t add any additional grapefruit or grapefruit juice.

4. Don’t eat between meals. If you eat the combination of foods suggested you will not get hungry.

5. The diet completely eliminates sugars and starches which are lipids and form fat. Fat doesn’t form Fat, it helps burn it. You can fry food in butter and use butter generously on vegetables.

6. DO NOT EAT DESSERTS, breads, white vegetables or sweet potatoes. You may double or triple helpings of meat, salad and approved vegetables. EAT UNTIL YOU ARE STUFFED. The more you eat, the more weight you will lose.

7. Drink 8 , 8oz glasses of water every day. This diet is given to heart patients needing to lose weight fast for by-pass surgery. All soft drinks need to be sugar and caffeine free.


White onions, potatoes, celery, peas, cereal, corn, starchy vegetables, potato chips, peanut butter, pasta, corn chips, jelly jams, sweet pickles, pretzels, fruit, low-fat/fat free or diet dressings


Red onions, bell peppers, radishes, broccoli, cucumbers, carrots, green onions, leaf spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, chili (with out the beans) mayo, any cheese, hot dogs, cole slaw, red salad dressings, green vegetables, 1 tsp. of dried nuts, dill pickles, bread and butter pickles.

    I looked this Diet up because I had it from a long time ago someone gave it to me, but I feel like I was missing some pieces and low and behold I was, So I’m Going To Try This Diet Because I Need To Drop Weight Fast. I Have The Worse Back Problem And The Weight Is Making It Worse, And I Don’t Have Time To Take It Off Slowly, I’ll Take It Off Fast Then Maintain It By Eating And Exercising The Correct Way….Ask Me In 12 days starting Tomorrow……………So anyone has any questions feel free to ask me.

    I’m going to do this by the letter and see what happens, I think it will work, I have done something like it and it worked but that was years ago and I want to try this one because I like eating what it wants us to eat. If anyone would like the other things I have tried just ask and I’ll post it. One is a soup.

    Okay should anyone log back into this site, Today is my 5th day and I have lost 5 lbs as of today. it says you won’t lose any weight until the fifth day and it was correct. to my understanding no sugar at all works best. I read at this rate you could lose 52 lbs in two months that’s my aim…………….

    First congrats on your loss already!! I hope im the next one saying that in 5 days. Do u mind me asking what you ate? If it was salads was it just lettuce, dressing and meat? Any tips would be greatly appreciated I quit smoking and have gained way too much weight and need it off just as fast as it came.

    I don’t mind telling you what I ate, not at all. In the morning I had pork bacon two eggs and half a grapefruit and 16onces (2 eight oz glass of water or water with each meal. for lunch some type of meat mostly chicken, fish or even pork chops and hamburgers, no bread with any meals, I had a salad with any dressing the diet wants you to consume fat so don’t do low fat anything and with each meal a half of grapefruit. I eat the pink grapefruits cause I love those the best, with each meal 2 eight oz. of water. and water all in between as well cause I get thirsty a lot. for dinner I have veggies and meat and half of grapefruit, water and before late a glass of tomatoes juice just as it instructs. I looked up the diet on line. 12 days on 2 days off and it gave me what I was missing from the instructions I had gotten way back when. You should google it so you can have the complete instructions yourself. there are only two versions. this is of course Jon’s .

    Thank you for the info. You make it sound so easy and have motivated me more than you can believe! Ive never been a fan if grapefruit but ill give the pink ones a try and hope for the best. Its so nice to have an actual person to talk with about this diet. Do you feel like you have more energy now, just wondering how im going to be with no coffee lol thank you again i truly appreciate it

    Honestly my energy level may differ then others because I’m dealing with menopause and it has sucked all the life out me energy but we will see when 12 days have come and gone. And since I’m trying to learn how to eat healthy on the two days I have off I will eat things I don’t eat on my day on. But I won’t do bad things. I plan on drinking Protein shakes most of the time, but I’m gonna sneak some ice cream in there but not over do it. Because after I loose the weight I want I have to maintain it and continue to eat clean and healthy.

    I don’t want to discourage you, but I moved on because the problem for me is how much it relies on you eating and it only caused me to lose 5lbs, I was tired of eating so much. so it’s not the diet for me………..but please if it works for you please continue. I’m going to post this other one that I know works because I lost major weight with it but at first I couldn’t find it, I dug until I did. there are so many different ones but I like this one the best because it taste good and it doesn’t over fill you even if you over eat, and it’s only 7days. A friend of mine’s mother gave it to me. She was going for surgery and they wanted her to drop the weight quickly…………….

    Okay ill look forward to the other diet, honestly after the first try with grapefruit juice im not sure how long i can do this one anyway! I am so not a fan of it. But please post thr other diet & i can always give that one a shot too. Thanks for all thr advice & honesty :)

    Basic Fat Burning Soup
    6 Large green onions (yellow)
    2 green peppers
    1 or 2 cans of diced tomatoes
    1 bunch of celery
    1-pkg. Lipton Onion Soup Mix
    1-2 cubes of Bouillon (if desired)
    Season To Taste with Salt, pepper, parsley, etc.
    Cut veggies into small to med. pieces and cover w/water.(V-8 and water can be used). Boil fast for ten minutes, then reduce to simmer and continue cooking until veggies are tender. Eat as much as you want whenever you want any time of day. This soup will not add calories. The more you eat , the more you lose. Fill your thermos in the morning if you will be away from home during the day.
    Side note* (I had to use two large pots because It makes a lot and I didn’t have one very big pot, so when it comes to the 2 cans of tomatoes one in each pot and the Lipton soup one package in each pot and the Bouillon cubes I used 2 cubes in each pot.
    Because everyone digestive system is different this diet will affect everyone differently. After day three you will have more energy than when you began if you do not cheat. If after being on the diet for several days you find your bowel movement has changed. eat a cup of bran and fiber. Although you can have black coffee with this diet, you may find you won’t need the caffeine after the third day.

    Definite NO-No:
    No bread, alcoholic beverages, or carbonated beverages, Not even diet soft drinks, stick with water, unsweetened teas, black coffee, and unsweetened fruit juices, cranberry juice and skim milk (only these beverages on the designated days) No fried foods or breads. You may eat broiled or baked chicken instead of beef, absolutely no skin on chicken. If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef also, but only one of the beef days, you will need the protein in the beef the other day.

    Day One; All fruits EXCEPT Bananas; Your first day will consist of all the fruit you can eat. Like Cantaloupes and watermelon. Eat only your soup and fruit the first day. For drinks- unsweetened teas, cranberry juice and water.

    Day Two: All vegetables. Stuff your self all you want with fresh veggies cooked or raw. Try to eat leafy, green veggies along with your soup. At Dinner reward yourself with a baked potato but no butter. Do not eat any fruit today…….

    Day Three: Mix day one and two. eat all the soup, fruits and veggies you want. No Baked Potato

    Day Four: Banana’s and skim Milk. eat as many as eight bananas and drink as many glasses of skim Milk on this day along with your soup.

    Day Five: Beef and tomatoes. Ten to Twenty ounces of beef and up to six fresh tomatoes. At least 5-8 glasses of water this day to wash the uric acid from your body, Eat your soup at least once this day.

    Day Six: Beef and veggies. Eat to your hearts content of the beef and veggies this day. You can have 2 or 3 steaks if you like with leafy green veggies. No Baked Potato. eat your soup at least once.

    Day Seven: Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juice, and veggies. Again, Stuff, Stuff, Stuff yourself. Be sure to eat your soup at least once this day.

    At The end of the seventh day if you have not cheated on this diet you will have lost 10 to 17 pounds. If you have lost more than 15 pounds, then go off it for 2 to 3 days before you try it again.

    Wow that diet seems very easy! And has so much more variety to it. I think once i finish all this grapefruit ill make some soup and try this one. Have you started it yet? Ive seen similar soups to this one and they added cabbage do you ever add it?

    Nope no cabbage needed. even my daughter just likes to eat it cause it taste so good. I finished `more then half of one whole pot already I didn’t mean to LOl, the chicken bouillon cubes makes all the difference and the Lipton soup you don’t need to add anything once all the ingredients is in. today is Day two for me veggies. I bought Collard greens and cabbage to cook and eat on the days a veggie is required. I bought a watermelon and a cantaloupe. the things about the grapefruit diet is although the pink grapefruit is good that’s a lot of acid and that’s why they only want you to eat half at each meal. And you had to eat a lot of meat to lose the weight, although I’m heavy it doesn’t all come from a lot of food just the wrong foods and the wrong times…..

    That is so me too! Life is stressful at times and some days its easier to go thru a drive thru instead. Well good luck to you & i hope the soup diet is our secret trick. I think ill make some the next time i go shopping. Keep updating your progress too its so motivating to know im not alone in this struggle.
