Home, Training, and Insights

As everyone knows, I learn more at my seminars than my audience. There is an old joke about teaching: 40 people watching one person learn the material. It’s true in an odd way. In Dublin, I kept on my little policy of absolute honesty. I am coming out with my own version of the Velocity Diet and I outlined the ideas, I told them exactly how I train and I admitted all my flaws (both of them…including humility).

I loved the trip. If you want to see the pics, hit me up on my Facebook account…if you need to add me as a friend, I am glad to do it. After a 25 hour trip home, I just lumped yesterday and trained today. In Dublin, I did some VO2 Max and a 100 rep race with the 16 kilo kbell and some this and that. Today, I did a lot of rolling, pull ups, some kbells and some Get Ups. I am experimenting with a Get Up on a foam roller, let me think this through over a few sessions.

I think the thing I come away with from most workshops is that it took me a long time to make things this simple. I’m working on my next book now (and I need a favor) and so much of what I explain in person doesn’t carry over into the written word. Alas.

The favor: we are moving into a second printing of “Never Let Go.” If you see any errors, can you let me know? Spelling or whatever is fine, we picked up about three or so. I would appreciate it.

A busy, busy four days

I will add more later, but the workshop at Informed Performance was awesome. Dan and Wil are great hosts and the people who attended were great. I shared a lot of really new stuff with the group and I gave them the “answer,” even if they didn’t yet know the question! I have some new diet ideas and my training concepts get cleared every time. Thanks again to everyone. I went to a wedding the last night and it was so fun. Then, three hours sleep and 25 hours of travel!

Back to Dublin, Christmas in Celbridge

We are having a great time. It gets dark here so early it just throws everyone off. Dan Fouts has been great. I’ve read a lot, walked a lot and had some great times in the Pubs. They are like social halls and everybody is welcome. It has been quiet.

I’m watching Hurling on TV…KIK is playing TIP but it is all in Gaelic so I’m doing my best to figure it out. Two days of workshops starting tomorrow. We are meeting the Porterhouse Pub tonight at seven, if you are around.

Dublin, Ireland

As a family, we are all dealing with the Jet Lag in different ways. I warned the girls about flight constipation and sleep oddities, but you have to live through it. I learned on my Middle East trip the importance of the bowels. Laugh all you want…until you live through it.

I’m off to check out the sights and sounds of Dublin today…wish me luck. We will load up pictures later. It was fun buying my daughters their first legal drinks, by the way.

The gym, Informed Performance, is really a nice place. It really reminds me of the original Gym Jones, in fact, it has a lot of the same attributes. There are probably just a few people who would remember the old place, but it had CHARACTER!

More later, I hope. Never know when you are traveling if you can

Off to Ireland…

“Last minute” is a phrase that modifies ‘packing.” Lots of little things to do, it’s winter in Utah, so leaving a house is a dangerous thing. I have come home to frozen pipes and all kinds of fun little issues…so, wish me luck.

Hopefully, the blog will be alive. Training is going to be rather light, but the adventures high. Lots of gifts for my friends at the gathering, too, and my hope for a Blessed and Merry Christmas to all of you.

Yoga and Christmas Parties

I had a great week of training. Sometimes, when I am most busy, I let the training slide as I make this rational decision that the time I use working out will be better served working. It is ALWAYS wrong. So, I had my college finals, my high school finals, and a trip to Ireland to prep for…and usually I would have cut back. This week, however, I trained. Yesterday, Tiff and I went to Bikram Yoga which is something I do about twice a week. I need it. I deserve it.

Giving Back

For the record, this is not “off topic.” I believe in this principle as much as I believe in training, resting and eating right. Through an odd set of events, I sat there in the weightroom today and laughed about how all these good things happen to me. Honestly, and maybe something awful is on the horizon, but my life is going pretty good.

And, it seems, the more I give, the more I get back. I talked with an old friend from the SMILF a few days ago and he reminded me about how I took the profits from much of my early work and gave it to a struggling school. I had forgotten all about it. Gary and Shaf will remember is that all I asked in return for that little weekend years ago was a donation to another school.

Advances In Functional Training

There is a line in Mike Boyle’s new book, Advances in Functional Training, that just made me laugh out loud: “On the other hand, some of our hardest working athletes look like they hardly train. As long as their performances reflects the time and effort they’ve put in, I’m happy.” The whole book is filled with these kinds of simple lines that anyone who has been in sport for the past few decades wants to applaud. The best athletes in the world don’t look like guys on the covers of magazines. The best athletes train to win, not to look the part.

Robert Gummerson on Bulking

An old friend, and inventor of the “Gummerson Drill,” Robert Gummerson sent this nice email to me after he read my article on tmuscle. This is the best part of the net, the sharing of real information by real people. The real great ones share a lot and don’t put themselves on “airs.”

Hi Dan,
Hope you and yours are very well and that you are training fully again.

Robb Wolf Breaks My Heart!

I love Robb. He has been my mentor in nutrition since we first shared emails in 1999 or so. Robb has had me play with ideas like only single foods at meals (stuff yourself on turkey or steak and it’s good for you!) and, of course, he was the guy to make me start taking, and pushing, fish oil capsules. Every time I talk to him, I come away with more clarity.

Robb gave me the big three keys years ago:
