Hi Dan,
Haematocrit is the portion of your blood that is occupied by red blood cells. A count of 47 is average for a male. The more haematocrit, the more oxygen is able to be transported to muscles, etc. Hence you’ll see cyclists and other endurance types, look to “boost” their haematocrit via altitude training, giving blood (funnily enough) and via doping. As strength athletes I would assume that this is also favourable.

Dan,
Just curious about your thoughts on on Bud Winter’s ‘Relax and Win’. You mentioned it in one of your earlier articles and it sounds like a pretty interesting read. The problem is the local library has no copies and after much searching online I haven’t found any copies for less than $200. Just wondering if you think this book is worth $200? And yes, if it the book is as good as I think, then it does match my goals… still, @ $200 I’d like to talk to someone who’s actually read it. Thanks for all the great info and inspiration.

Relax and Win is not worth 200 dollars. Main thing to take from relax and win is loose hands loose jaws. Its a chapter of going through the relaxation routine. The next chapter is almost exactly the same. The take home message though is to keep your hands and your face relaxed.

Do you lift on the same day as you give blood?
